Habe mir das Buch als Grundlage zum Thema Zahlenanalphabetismus zugegelegt, brauchte es für ein Projekt im Studium.Bin leider sehr enttäuscht.Es steckt viel persönliche Meinung drin, die fundierten Zahlenbeispiele, die ich mir erhofft hatte, sind nur sehr spärlich und meist auch nur angerissen. V.a. aber konzentriert sich der Autor komplett auf die USA mit seinen Angaben. Ich hatte mir da etwas mehr allgemeinere, ggf. weltweite Fakten und v.a. weniger eigene Meinung und mehr fundiertes Fachwissen erhofft.Schade.

While I liked Innumeracy, I have got to say that the Kindle edition is rather bad. The typesetting is so bad in parts that the math becomes completely illegible (and the non-math parts aren't exactly polished, either).I do not believe this has been proofread beyond page one.

This book really brought home my own experiences with "innumeracy." Back in the 'sixties when I was in high school, I enjoyed mathematics and decided to take trigonometry; I was the only girl in the class. Mid-semester I transferred to another school, and I was told upon enrolling that I couldn't take trigonometry as it was a "boys only" class! What a flap that would cause now! Instead, I meekly accepted this and was put in a sociology class. Grrrr! It still makes me mad, mostly at myself for being so docile. Perhaps things have improved for young women in the intervening years, but I'm afraid that too many otherwise bright women have the mistaken notion that they "just aren't good at math."Mr. Paulos' book is wonderfully witty, and it's obvious that he loves his subject. I wish that I'd had him for a math teacher rather than the football coach who was doing double duty as the high school algebra teacher.

Das ist ein kurzweiliges Buch für unterwegs mit vielen Beispielen (ähnlich wie das Ziegenproblem von Gero von Randow). Allerdings treibt es der Autor mit seinen Zahlenspielereien auch manchmal etwas zu weit (5-6 Beispiele wo 1-2 auch gereicht hätten). Außerdem beschäftigt er sich über (zu?) weite Strecken auch mit Auswirkungen und Ursachen von "Innumeracy".In dem Rahmen dieses kleinen Bandes ist das Buch aber durchaus gelungen und regt durchaus zum Nachdenken an.

The approach that John Allen Paulos takes in making us aware of our innumeracy is very illustrating and convincing (and also fun to read). However, his arguments sometimes lack an explicit definition of the context in which he makes them. In my personal view his context is statistics which in it self is a model of course, that has it's foundation in "the swamp" so to speak: i.e. the profoundness of math goes deep, but there's always more for mankind to be discovered ... whether it's the truth or something else that goes beyond truth. How about love ?

I have my elementary education students read and write a report on this book. For almost all of them it is an eye opening experience. I get many comments like "I was not aware of innumeracy until now" and "I thouroughly enjoyed this book, It made me think of my own attitudes towards math". Most everyone That I assign this book to comes away with a positive learning experience. I believe that this is the best and most easily accessable of Paulos' books.

Paulos became a hero with this book, but the book is overrated. A couple of the examples are just plain wrong. If you like Allan Bloom, you'll like John Allen Paulos, but I think both of them are a bit whiny.Henry Troup
